I often get asked why people do an engagement shoot - mostly by single friends actually haha. With the experience that I have in shooting them, I developed this list to explain what makes them so beneficial to the wedding process.
It gets you comfortable with the camera and with me.
It’s rare that I meet people who naturally feel at home in front of the camera, but one of the things that I am most proud of in my work is getting people to not only feel comfortable, but to love the process.
An engagement shoot is often the first real meeting that we have, and a great chance to not only talk plans but to get any camera shyness out of the way before the wedding.
It makes you a model.
Once you're warmed up to the camera, my style generally involves some subtle prompts here and there to get the best looking images from the session.
Some of these prompts and poses I've picked up from shooting so many weddings, and some from shooting fashion.
Long story short, you'll come away with some tips on how to look your best and know that you're nailing the photos.
You get another set of memories.
The images from an engagement session are such a great contrast to those from your wedding, and also a little time capsule of the engaged period of your life.
Posing and camera-skills aside, imagine looking back in 5 or 10 years time and being able to see life both before and after the wedding.
An engagement session is an invaluable part of the wedding planning process, allowing you to feel confident and comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding.
I believe they are so important that I actually include them with all wedding photography bookings.
